An Ancient Viking Legacy
Exploring the origins of the Vastgotaspets
An ancient breed developed to herd cattle, the Swedish Vallhund originated more than 1,000 years ago during the Vikings era in Sweden where they were known as the “Vikingarnas Hund,” or the “Viking Dog.” The Swedish Vallhund, (Vastogaspets), is a small to medium dog with a muscular body and short, stocky legs. Their head is wedge-shaped with upright, triangular ears and oval eyes. They have a short double coat and can have any tail length, from no tail to a long-curled tail. Alert and confident, the Swedish Vallhund is an excellent watchdog and protector. Steadfast, spirited, the breed is generally sociable and has a sweet temperament. They are athletic, active and make a cheerful and loving companion who loves to clown around and play.
This wonderful breed with their ancient history almost became extinct by the 1940's and it was only through the concerted efforts of two Swedish dog enthusiasts, Karl-Gustav Zettersen and Count Bjorn Von Rosen that the breed was re-developed and saved. With their short legs, speed and agility they are extremely versatile and can be found in all walks of life from family pets, dog sports, tracking, patrol work, search and rescue to traditional farm work.
